Probiotics have a vital role in maintaining a healthy gut microbiota, which positively impacts our immune system. A well-balanced gut microbiome prevents harmful microorganisms from entering the bloodstream and other organs through the gut. Consequently, it can prevent the occurrence and overgrowth of bacteria that causes severe gastroenteritis and urinary tract infections like cystitis and prostatitis.

Stimulating immune cells

On top of that, a study suggested that probiotics regulate host innate and adaptive immune responses by modulating the functions of immune cells (dendritic cells, macrophages, and T and B lymphocytes).

Well, Yes, as well as No. Although there are several ongoing research on probiotic efficacy and their potential role in the treatment of the men-health related issues, they are not recommended to substitute a standard treatment for a certain condition.

For example, although probiotics can prevent the recurrence of urinary tract infections, they cannot replace the prescribed standard antibiotic therapy for UTIs. In the same way, if you have heart disease, it is not sufficient to take probiotics alone but you can use probiotics as an add-on therapy based on your specific medical condition.

There are several probiotics that have enough evidence to have benefits.  They can be used reliably to prevent a certain medical condition or to assist in the treatment of a disease.  For example, Bifidobacterium strains are useful as a treatment for acid reflux (heart burns) when given together with antacids or proton pump inhibitors.
